Vals alarm: Milaan Hejduk is enkel Fijne Dank

More photos » Jack Dempsey - AP
4 days ago: Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene (9) and Milan Hejduk (23), from the Czech Republic, celebrate with Paul Stastny after Stastny scored a goal against the Los Angeles Kings during the first period of an NHL hockey game Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)
On October 19th I took Milan Hejduk to task, and explored the fact that The Duke had been on the ice during opposing even-handed and short-handed goals against at a rate much higher than his teammates, and that his one goal and two assists after six games was far below his typical output. I wondered if he was playing injured.
Apparently, Hejduk is just fine. In the three games since that post, Hejduk has scored six total points (three goals, three assists). In the last four, he's scored eight. He's also looked far quicker and aggressive during his shifts and he's shying from physical contact far less than before.
As for goals against, the Avs have been outscored 14-9 in the last three games (all losses), but Hejduk has only been on the ice for three EV or SH goals against. He no longer appears to be a defensive liability as he was earlier this year. His (and his PP linemates') only major flub was the shorthanded goal by Jarrett Stoll that gave the Kings the lead late in the third period on Oct. 23. The Avs couldn't respond and eventually lost 6-4. The PP line of Hejduk, Stastny and Stewart has allowed four shorthanded goals so far this year (nine games), which is pretty terrible.
Overall, Hejduk is playing like his old self, and is putting tons of points on the board. He's now got nine points in nine games, and is among the league's scoring leaders. Maybe he reads MHH and got motivated by my criticism, or maybe he's just overcome whatever problem ailed him up until now. I'm happy either way.

Alright, so I was a little slow figuring out the hyperlinks, sorry about yesterday, now it should be better! As promised the bits and links will continue. There will also now be a "Quote of the night" so let's get our funny-and-smart caps on! You do want to be chosen, don't you? On with the show...
First, let's start with my favorite quote of the night from our recap:.... Drumroll please?
The sounds of a basketball game. Worst ever. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I can close my eyes and just listen to a hockey game and be happy.
and the winner is Beachie! Yes, I so completely agree! A hockey game is an incredible soundtrack.
Also to be noted :
Is there a way to change my screen name? I think it’s time to go Chia full time
Yes, from now on ChiAvs is to be known as Chia Pet. :)
Okay, onto some links:
This is a preview for tonight's game: CBS Preview,
"I'd like to be in, and it looks like I'm going to be, so just be ready and see what happens and help the team get some wins," said Budaj, who won his last two starts against the Flames in 2008-09 but didn't face them last season.
Another Preview for the Flames' game:
However, the Avs have yielded five goals during their last 13 shorthanded situations. They have taken 138 minutes in penalties through their first nine games, which is the fifth most in the league
But more frightening, if that's at all possible:
Colorado is reporting that John-Michael Liles (shoulder) and center Paul Stastny (face) are both "probable" for Thursday’s contest.
Canoe Gave JML some well-deserved attention. I am loving how his personality is shinning through this year. Seems like his points are helping him relax a little. He always seems to be joking and happy. The guys had to practice against a goalie tutor today:
"He was pretty good up high," Avs defenceman John-Michael Liles said jokingly of the big blue canvas stretched across the posts on the home side of the rink in practice.
Calgary Herald says that Sacco AND the guys have confidence in him.
"I have all the confidence in the world in Peter and, more importantly, his teammates have all the confidence in the world in him."
Oh, and one last thing: I Believe in Peter Budaj!

Anderson uit voor onbepaalde tijd maar Geen Vereiste Chirurgie
If no surgery is needed then there is no full tear, which is great. Hopefully the Avalanche release full details of the injury (I know, I know) to the fans and media. Better to let the facts out than to have baseless speculation running rampant.
It would seem that now might be time to get restart the "I Believe in Budaj" campaign as he's now the #1 again. Those were good times, weren't they?
It's not like Anderson was playing lights out to this point nor was Budaj playing badly. However Anderson has shown the ability to deliver consistently stellar results while Budaj has shown the opposite.
But I tell ya, there's strength in his new hairdo. I'm not worried.
Anderson uit, chirurgie niet schijnt vereist.
Bad news, Anderson is in Denver. Worse news: he's not feeling so hot. Decent news: recovery won't involve surgery.
VoiceoftheAvs Mike Haynes This just in...Coach Sacco says Anderson has knee injury but no surgery
Bad news again: Derek may have been right:
TheAvsGuild The Avalanche Guild Not sure if this is an "update" or speculation. RT @buccigross: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson might have torn ACL. That would be awful.
Also, looks like it'll be John Grahame who will get to play backup tomorrow for Peter Budaj (credit to Chia Pet).
Frei adds to it:
CALGARY _ Avalanche coach Joe Sacco this afternoon said Craig Anderson had seen doctors back in Denver and the verdict was that the Colorado goaltender will be out “indefinitely” with a knee injury, but that he won’t require surgery.
“It’s going to require some treatment and rehab, and we hope to have him back as soon as possible,” Sacco said after Colorado’s practice in the Saddledome.
The Avalanche has recalled veteran goalie John Grahame, 35, from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League, and he will join the team in Calgary in time for Thursday night’s game against the Flames.

1 day ago: VANCOUVER CANADA - OCTOBER 26: Goalie Roberto Luongo #1 of the Vancouver Canucks watches Brandon Yip #18 of the Colorado Avalanche try and get a shot on net while lying on top of Canucks Andrew Alberts #41 during the second period in NHL action on October 26 2010 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. (Photo by Rich Lam/Getty Images)
The silver lining in tonight's loss is that Liles set a new NHL record for an points assist streak by a defenseman to begin a season when he notched the 2nd assist on Winnik's goal. It must be his new pretty hair.
Budaj was the scheduled starter, but Anderson went down with a knee injury in warm-ups (no, Ballard was not involved as he was out with an injury of his own), so Budaj was the ONLY option. Had he been hurt in the game, the Avs could have put any player in goal they wanted. I wish no harm to Budaj, but I kinda would have liked to witness that scenario. As of this recap, no official word on the extent of Andy's injury.
To the game: the Avs and 'Nucks traded goals in the first. David Jones netted his 3rd of the season, courtesy a smart pass by Hejduk in the neutral zone. Hejduk's helper freed up Jones who utilized his speed and blew past both Vancouver defenders before beating Luongo with a quick wrist shot. A little later, the freak passing on the Sedin twins evened things up after both brothers made perfect touch passes to Tambellini, who threw the puck up and over a sliding Budaj. If you put a trash can on the right side of Henrik Sedin, it would score 30 goals. Both teams then traded chances, good cycles, and powerplays but the first ended tied at 1. Budaj was sharp stopping 15 of the 16 shots he faced.
In the second period, the Canucks found thenselves on the receiving end of a weird bounce that sent a dump-in right back out onto the stick of Henrik Sedin. The evil twin made a good move to get Budaj down, but he couldn't corral the puck to stuff it home. The Avs quickly transitioned that odd sequence the other way on a 2-on-1 with Radar O'Reilly making a very mature play. He waited for Winnik to drive the lone defenseman to the opposite side of the net and then placed a perfectly timed fake slapshot/pass right into the tangled mess driving to the net, with Winnik tapping the puck home. Beautiful play. Winnink is doing his best to make us forget...who was that....oh ya, Hendricks.
Daniel Sedin scored a goal on a powerplay minutes later, but it was waived off because the ref had blown the play dead. Thanks zebra! It didn't really matter because later on the same powerplay Ryan Kesler was the beneficiary of another friendly bounce off a point shot that hit a body in front and dropped right at his feet. 2-2.
Later, Stastny almost scored from his knees, but Loungo was pushed into the net and the puck was hiding under him somewhere. Stastny's first line would draw a penalty minutes later with some good old fashioned hard work down low. The Avs had some quality chances on the subsequent PP, but Luongo stopped them all.
Things opened up a bit in the third before, eventually, the Canucks pinned the Avs down in their zone. Hannan blocked a shot and was limping on the ice, which led to Budaj getting beat on a screened slap shot. 3-2 Vancouver. Budaj then made a fantastic save on another freakish Sedin passing play that found Daniel creep right in front and miss on a great scoring chance.
Later, Stastny went down after taking a vicious errant elbow on the forecheck. I shit my pants and shed some tears as SoS lay motionless on the ice for several minutes (no penalty), fearing another concussion for our beloved team. Luckily, Peter's son is a badass and Paul returned to the ice minutes later. The Avs had a bunch of players go down with nasty looking injuries, all to return (besides Anderson). This night could have been much worse than it was.
After a Vancouver timeout, Sacco pulled Budaj with under two minutes to play with the face off coming in the Vancouver zone. The extra attacker paid off as Duchene buried a cross ice pass from Hejduk to tie it up with 1:33 to play. Quincey almost put the Avs ahead when his slapper hit two Vancouver bodies before clanging off the cross bar with seconds to go. But it was Peter Budaj who made the save of the game after an unlucky turn-over let Malhotra in all alone on Budaj, but the Slovakian netminder shut the door - with 5 seconds left.
28 seconds into OT, Mason Raymond chipped the puck off Holos' stick and right past a surprised Budaj. Lame. The Avs played well and fought hard to earn their loser point tonight.
Quick Hits
- Wilson was mack trucking fools all over the ice tonight. His perfectly timed hitting might just keep teams honest. I want teams to have to warn each other about our #44.
- Hannan returned from his head injury last game (puck to the head).
- The Canucks wore their white away jerseys because they were doing their ring of honor thing. They also had no names on their jerseys. That is really helpful when you're doing a recap. Thanks Vancouver!
- According to Mike Haynes, Chris Stewart made a save when he took a shot on Luongo in the third. Yes folks, Chris Stewart is THAT good.
Video Highlights
Next Up
The jaunt into Western Canada continues as the Avs take on Alex Tangauy and his Flames: Thursday, 7:30 MDT, at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Who krijgt de Vraag?
For those who might have missed it, Craig Anderson injured his knee during warmups last night. He was not on the bench for the game and has returned to Denver, meaning he will miss the game in Calgary for sure.
The Avalanche will be calling up either John Grahame or Jason Bacashihua today. Both have NHL experience (224 games for Grahame, 38 games for B-Cash). Interestingly, both have almost identical stats so far in Lake Erie:
# | Goalies | GP | Mins | W | L | SL | SO | GA | GAA | SVS | SV% |
47 | John Grahame | 4 | 244 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 10 | 2.46 | 101 | 0.910 |
35 | Jason Bacashihua | 4 | 242 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 10 | 2.47 | 100 | 0.909 |
Considering that Peter Budaj will be the starter on Thursday anyway, does it even matter which guy gets called up to wear the baseball cap?
