Vals alarm: Milaan Hejduk is enkel Fijne Dank

4 days ago: Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene (9) and Milan Hejduk (23), from the Czech Republic, celebrate with Paul Stastny after Stastny scored a goal against the Los Angeles Kings during the first period of an NHL hockey game Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in Denver. (AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)
On October 19th I took Milan Hejduk to task, and explored the fact that The Duke had been on the ice during opposing even-handed and short-handed goals against at a rate much higher than his teammates, and that his one goal and two assists after six games was far below his typical output. I wondered if he was playing injured.
Apparently, Hejduk is just fine. In the three games since that post, Hejduk has scored six total points (three goals, three assists). In the last four, he's scored eight. He's also looked far quicker and aggressive during his shifts and he's shying from physical contact far less than before.
As for goals against, the Avs have been outscored 14-9 in the last three games (all losses), but Hejduk has only been on the ice for three EV or SH goals against. He no longer appears to be a defensive liability as he was earlier this year. His (and his PP linemates') only major flub was the shorthanded goal by Jarrett Stoll that gave the Kings the lead late in the third period on Oct. 23. The Avs couldn't respond and eventually lost 6-4. The PP line of Hejduk, Stastny and Stewart has allowed four shorthanded goals so far this year (nine games), which is pretty terrible.
Overall, Hejduk is playing like his old self, and is putting tons of points on the board. He's now got nine points in nine games, and is among the league's scoring leaders. Maybe he reads MHH and got motivated by my criticism, or maybe he's just overcome whatever problem ailed him up until now. I'm happy either way.

Alright, so I was a little slow figuring out the hyperlinks, sorry about yesterday, now it should be better! As promised the bits and links will continue. There will also now be a "Quote of the night" so let's get our funny-and-smart caps on! You do want to be chosen, don't you? On with the show...
First, let's start with my favorite quote of the night from our recap:.... Drumroll please?
The sounds of a basketball game. Worst ever. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I can close my eyes and just listen to a hockey game and be happy.
and the winner is Beachie! Yes, I so completely agree! A hockey game is an incredible soundtrack.
Also to be noted :
Is there a way to change my screen name? I think it’s time to go Chia full time
Yes, from now on ChiAvs is to be known as Chia Pet. :)
Okay, onto some links:
This is a preview for tonight's game: CBS Preview,
"I'd like to be in, and it looks like I'm going to be, so just be ready and see what happens and help the team get some wins," said Budaj, who won his last two starts against the Flames in 2008-09 but didn't face them last season.
Another Preview for the Flames' game:
However, the Avs have yielded five goals during their last 13 shorthanded situations. They have taken 138 minutes in penalties through their first nine games, which is the fifth most in the league
But more frightening, if that's at all possible:
Colorado is reporting that John-Michael Liles (shoulder) and center Paul Stastny (face) are both "probable" for Thursday’s contest.
Canoe Gave JML some well-deserved attention. I am loving how his personality is shinning through this year. Seems like his points are helping him relax a little. He always seems to be joking and happy. The guys had to practice against a goalie tutor today:
"He was pretty good up high," Avs defenceman John-Michael Liles said jokingly of the big blue canvas stretched across the posts on the home side of the rink in practice.
Calgary Herald says that Sacco AND the guys have confidence in him.
"I have all the confidence in the world in Peter and, more importantly, his teammates have all the confidence in the world in him."
Oh, and one last thing: I Believe in Peter Budaj!

Anderson uit voor onbepaalde tijd maar Geen Vereiste Chirurgie
If no surgery is needed then there is no full tear, which is great. Hopefully the Avalanche release full details of the injury (I know, I know) to the fans and media. Better to let the facts out than to have baseless speculation running rampant.
It would seem that now might be time to get restart the "I Believe in Budaj" campaign as he's now the #1 again. Those were good times, weren't they?
It's not like Anderson was playing lights out to this point nor was Budaj playing badly. However Anderson has shown the ability to deliver consistently stellar results while Budaj has shown the opposite.
But I tell ya, there's strength in his new hairdo. I'm not worried.
Anderson uit, chirurgie niet schijnt vereist.
Bad news, Anderson is in Denver. Worse news: he's not feeling so hot. Decent news: recovery won't involve surgery.
VoiceoftheAvs Mike Haynes This just in...Coach Sacco says Anderson has knee injury but no surgery
Bad news again: Derek may have been right:
TheAvsGuild The Avalanche Guild Not sure if this is an "update" or speculation. RT @buccigross: Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson might have torn ACL. That would be awful.
Also, looks like it'll be John Grahame who will get to play backup tomorrow for Peter Budaj (credit to Chia Pet).
Frei adds to it:
CALGARY _ Avalanche coach Joe Sacco this afternoon said Craig Anderson had seen doctors back in Denver and the verdict was that the Colorado goaltender will be out “indefinitely” with a knee injury, but that he won’t require surgery.
“It’s going to require some treatment and rehab, and we hope to have him back as soon as possible,” Sacco said after Colorado’s practice in the Saddledome.
The Avalanche has recalled veteran goalie John Grahame, 35, from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League, and he will join the team in Calgary in time for Thursday night’s game against the Flames.

1 day ago: VANCOUVER CANADA - OCTOBER 26: Goalie Roberto Luongo #1 of the Vancouver Canucks watches Brandon Yip #18 of the Colorado Avalanche try and get a shot on net while lying on top of Canucks Andrew Alberts #41 during the second period in NHL action on October 26 2010 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. (Photo by Rich Lam/Getty Images)
The silver lining in tonight's loss is that Liles set a new NHL record for an points assist streak by a defenseman to begin a season when he notched the 2nd assist on Winnik's goal. It must be his new pretty hair.
Budaj was the scheduled starter, but Anderson went down with a knee injury in warm-ups (no, Ballard was not involved as he was out with an injury of his own), so Budaj was the ONLY option. Had he been hurt in the game, the Avs could have put any player in goal they wanted. I wish no harm to Budaj, but I kinda would have liked to witness that scenario. As of this recap, no official word on the extent of Andy's injury.
To the game: the Avs and 'Nucks traded goals in the first. David Jones netted his 3rd of the season, courtesy a smart pass by Hejduk in the neutral zone. Hejduk's helper freed up Jones who utilized his speed and blew past both Vancouver defenders before beating Luongo with a quick wrist shot. A little later, the freak passing on the Sedin twins evened things up after both brothers made perfect touch passes to Tambellini, who threw the puck up and over a sliding Budaj. If you put a trash can on the right side of Henrik Sedin, it would score 30 goals. Both teams then traded chances, good cycles, and powerplays but the first ended tied at 1. Budaj was sharp stopping 15 of the 16 shots he faced.
In the second period, the Canucks found thenselves on the receiving end of a weird bounce that sent a dump-in right back out onto the stick of Henrik Sedin. The evil twin made a good move to get Budaj down, but he couldn't corral the puck to stuff it home. The Avs quickly transitioned that odd sequence the other way on a 2-on-1 with Radar O'Reilly making a very mature play. He waited for Winnik to drive the lone defenseman to the opposite side of the net and then placed a perfectly timed fake slapshot/pass right into the tangled mess driving to the net, with Winnik tapping the puck home. Beautiful play. Winnink is doing his best to make us forget...who was that....oh ya, Hendricks.
Daniel Sedin scored a goal on a powerplay minutes later, but it was waived off because the ref had blown the play dead. Thanks zebra! It didn't really matter because later on the same powerplay Ryan Kesler was the beneficiary of another friendly bounce off a point shot that hit a body in front and dropped right at his feet. 2-2.
Later, Stastny almost scored from his knees, but Loungo was pushed into the net and the puck was hiding under him somewhere. Stastny's first line would draw a penalty minutes later with some good old fashioned hard work down low. The Avs had some quality chances on the subsequent PP, but Luongo stopped them all.
Things opened up a bit in the third before, eventually, the Canucks pinned the Avs down in their zone. Hannan blocked a shot and was limping on the ice, which led to Budaj getting beat on a screened slap shot. 3-2 Vancouver. Budaj then made a fantastic save on another freakish Sedin passing play that found Daniel creep right in front and miss on a great scoring chance.
Later, Stastny went down after taking a vicious errant elbow on the forecheck. I shit my pants and shed some tears as SoS lay motionless on the ice for several minutes (no penalty), fearing another concussion for our beloved team. Luckily, Peter's son is a badass and Paul returned to the ice minutes later. The Avs had a bunch of players go down with nasty looking injuries, all to return (besides Anderson). This night could have been much worse than it was.
After a Vancouver timeout, Sacco pulled Budaj with under two minutes to play with the face off coming in the Vancouver zone. The extra attacker paid off as Duchene buried a cross ice pass from Hejduk to tie it up with 1:33 to play. Quincey almost put the Avs ahead when his slapper hit two Vancouver bodies before clanging off the cross bar with seconds to go. But it was Peter Budaj who made the save of the game after an unlucky turn-over let Malhotra in all alone on Budaj, but the Slovakian netminder shut the door - with 5 seconds left.
28 seconds into OT, Mason Raymond chipped the puck off Holos' stick and right past a surprised Budaj. Lame. The Avs played well and fought hard to earn their loser point tonight.
Quick Hits
- Wilson was mack trucking fools all over the ice tonight. His perfectly timed hitting might just keep teams honest. I want teams to have to warn each other about our #44.
- Hannan returned from his head injury last game (puck to the head).
- The Canucks wore their white away jerseys because they were doing their ring of honor thing. They also had no names on their jerseys. That is really helpful when you're doing a recap. Thanks Vancouver!
- According to Mike Haynes, Chris Stewart made a save when he took a shot on Luongo in the third. Yes folks, Chris Stewart is THAT good.

Who krijgt de Vraag?
For those who might have missed it, Craig Anderson injured his knee during warmups last night. He was not on the bench for the game and has returned to Denver, meaning he will miss the game in Calgary for sure.
The Avalanche will be calling up either John Grahame or Jason Bacashihua today. Both have NHL experience (224 games for Grahame, 38 games for B-Cash). Interestingly, both have almost identical stats so far in Lake Erie:
# | Goalies | GP | Mins | W | L | SL | SO | GA | GAA | SVS | SV% |
47 | John Grahame | 4 | 244 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 10 | 2.46 | 101 | 0.910 |
35 | Jason Bacashihua | 4 | 242 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 10 | 2.47 | 100 | 0.909 |
Considering that Peter Budaj will be the starter on Thursday anyway, does it even matter which guy gets called up to wear the baseball cap?

Alright, the Avs lost last night, but John Michael Liles set an NHL record, and that's something, right? Unfortunately the Avs lost more than just a game, Craig Anderson is flying back to Denver today. He won't be available against Calgary. Hopefully it isn't too long term. Here are some links to peruse while you pretend to work.
Let's start the first one with:
The Denver Post: http://tinyurl.com/36yod4z So, I guess winning matters more to Liles than his record, at least for the moment.
When it’s all said and done, it might mean something to me, but right now, it’s about wins and losses. When my career’s done, I can say, ‘Yeah, that was a great thing,’ maybe, and I can tell my kids someday, but that’s about all it is right now."
NBC Sports http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/39841768/ns/sports-nhl/ It was an amusing little article. They actually compared his to Bieber *shudder*, but it seems like he has a good sense of humor about it, guess we aren't the only ones who noticed his locks.
This fast start has gotta be the hair, right? "A lot of people are saying that"
And another one:
The Avs website: http://avalanche.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=541694 It's just a short blurb talking about how Liles set a record.
"With his second period assist tonight, John-Michael Liles set a new NHL record for the longest assist streak by a defenseman to begin a season at nine games."
And finally I headed over to Nucks Misconduct, but they didn't have a recap thread instead they sent everyone to http://tinyurl.com/2fobc9s .
Luongo thought Jones' shot was perfect
"Sometimes you have to give the guy credit, it was a perfect shot right under the bar," Luongo said. "I kept focus."
and then a little further discussing the loss of Andy, I think they are kidding:
What would have happened if Peter Budaj got hurt? Craig Anderson injured his knee in warmup. Would have been great to see Kirk McLean, the Avs goalie coach, go in.
Lawine 3 - Canucks 4; De Uitgave van de verwonding
Johnny Liles with the NHL record! 9 straight games with an assist to open the season as a defenseman and he's now in the record books. Time to trade him while his stock is high. EDIT: I really simplified that record first time out, now corrected.
What in the blue hell was Jonas Holos doing driving the puck towards his own net on the game-winning play? I've been loving what Holos has brought to the team but that was a dandy. Oh well, call yourself an idiot, shake it off and don't do it again.
Does Manny Malhotra have a gold tooth?
How about the Duke defying age and his gimpy knee? He's still got silky smooth hands. And he's a pretty good stickhandler too... Too much? Yeah, moving on.
Conversely that Duchene kid hasn't brought anything this year and I'm surprised he hasn't been sent to the AHL yet.
Daniel Winnik continues to be the best free agent signing of the year with his hard working play. He got rewarded with a goal tonight and 18+ minutes of ice time. Well done, sir.
Where's Brandon Yip?
How about those injuries and close calls tonight? Liles gets cranked from behind , Stastny ate an elbow to the face and David Jones did something to his leg/knee/foot. All of them returned to the game but there was a lot of breath being held until they did.
I feel like I'm forgetting something. What was it? Oh that's right...ohmygodIhopeAndydidn'tblowouthiskneeduringwarmup!
Dater posted the injury video (embedded below) and it looked odd. It looked more like a tweak than a blown knee but let's wait until tomorrow before we start speculating, pontificating and prognosticating on how bad it is and what it means to the team. Or freak out now. Dealer's choice, really.
Budaj played a solid game tonight and it looks like he might be needed for a couple more upcoming starts. I think the updated hairdo is providing a solid aura for him so I'm not concerned if he has to fill in for a bit.

Spel 9 Voorproef: De Lawine van Colorado in Vancouver Canucks
We may not be in must-win territory tonight, but this is, in fact, a key early season test for the Colorado Avalanche. Both the Avalanche and Canucks have 8 points and the Avs are in danger of losing three in a row and need to pace with Vancouver and Calgary (Thursday's opponent).
Last year, the Avalanche shut out Vancouver 3-0 in the 2nd game on the season and won in in the shootout in game 79 to clinch a playoff berth. In between, though, was a whole lot of struggling with the Canucks winning the other 4 games by a convincing 22-8 margin.
Craig Anderson will take a break tonight, as Joe Sacco is going to Peter Budaj in net. The rest could do Anderson some good; he's been good this year but not quite great - and we're not just referring to his Roy Waltz on Saturday. Other than the shutout last year, Anderson doesn't have a great history against the Canucks. In fact, Anderson has 8 losses to Vancouver in his career, more than any other team and his .873 save percentage against Vancouver is the 3rd worst of the 30 teams he's faced (Los Angeles is the 2nd worst and #1 is, interestingly, the Colorado Avalanche). Meanwhile. Peter Budaj is a respectable 5-3-1 against Vancouver in his career.
The big story for the Avalanche is special teams. The Colorado PK ranks 27th in the league. The PP ranks 6th overall...but the team has given up 4 SH goals (officially - for all intents and purposes, it's 5 given up).
The other big stories, for the 3rd or 4th consecutive season, is injuries. Peter Mueller, David Koci and Adam Foote are all out for tonight's game (Foote is not on this road trip), although it appears that Scott Hannan may play. The Canucks are also banged up. Forwards Alex Burrows and Alex Bolduc are out, as are defensemen Sami Salo and Keith Ballard (whew). Dan Hamuis is day-to-day but you figure he'll recover in time to play the Avs as Jamal Mayers and Chris Pronger have done already this year.

Het Hoge Hockey van de mijl versus het Gilde van de Lawine
Mile High Hockey vs. The Avalanche Guild
Well, you asked for them and here they are, pictures from the After Hours hockey game. A very special thank you to Alex Cooper for taking such tremendous pictures of all the action that took place during our game at Pepsi Center, I know it's an experience I won't forget.
De Radioactieve neerslag van de Slag van de Markering van de knoeiboel
A FanShot a little lower in the page linked to the results of the Avs - Kings HashTweet battle from Saturday. The Kings "won" the battle, but the real winners are the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and unnamed Denver cancer charities who will receive $29,374 and $13,876 respectively (it looks like the Kroenke Group chose not to stick with their $5,000 cap for the event, which deserves a stick tap).
Along the way, though, some feathers were rustled. Ryan Boulding at the Burgundy Blog posted an open letter to Adrian Dater tonight taking Dater to task for blocking BB's twitter feed. Why did Dater do this? Because the Burgundy Blog criticized Dater for not using the #GoAvs hash tag enough during the game, especially through his AvsNews feed. Dater has since unblocked the Burgundy Blog, restoring order to the universe (or something).
Look, I think it's great the folks like Ryan or Angelique Murray got into the spirit and made liberal use of the #GoAvs hash tag. But it might be going a little far to call out someone for not using it. Was it for a great cause? Sure. Should it be Dater's decision to make? Absolutely. And hey, why not call out Mike Haynes or those idiots at Mile High Hockey? They didn't use the hashtag either, which clearly means they love cancer.
Ryan does have one thing right, though:
@adater we're all a family, no need to get upset about it
Which is why I got so bent out of shape when I read this from a King's blog following Saturday's game:
I must say I am disappointed and somewhat annoyed by the lack of hockey coverage for the Avalanche in Colorado. So many of these fans sites or blogs are days and sometimes weeks behind. Also, the Avalanche’s official site has a post game report from…wait for it…the Associated Press. So, I picked the only two relevant sites I could find that spoke of this game.
Which is odd, because besides our recap there's coverage by Put It On Ice, The Burgundy Blog, The Avs Factor and Anyone But Detroit - all "relevant" blogs. As a former SoCal resident, I'm aware that life in LaLa land can be a little more laid back, but surfing the net isn't that hard, is it?

De slag was over tegen de tijd dat ik verscheen
The L.A. Kings fans won the battle and I can't help but think that had I been around Saturday night, this whole thing would have turned out differently.
Alas, I was not. However I would still like to add my contribution to the mix.
Generally, I tweet maybe once or twice during a game. But with the stakes on the line Saturday night, I'm surmising I would have put up closer to 100 tweets.
So what I'm going to do is donate the $100 I would have raised Saturday night to charity. I don't know the specifics of where the Avalanche directed their money but if anyone does know how I could funnel it there, please let me know.
If nobody knows, I'll pick another cancer-related charity. With Movember looming, possibly something to do with prostate cancer. If anyone has other suggestions, feel free to share.
Hopefully the Avalanche - and every other team in every other pro sports league - does this again. And again and again and again and...

Forgive me for keeping this short, but I think I can boil this one down as simply as possible. This meeting between the San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche was an entertaining one. It was evenly played with hard hitting and an intensity that started slowly but built steadily all game long.
So, what was the difference? The Sharks had 4 powerplay opportunities - including one 5 on 3 - and converted twice. The Avalanche had 3 powerplay opportunities in the 3rd period and converted once. That was the difference. Each team had an even strength goal in the first - Kyle Cumiskey for the Avs (for the first time ever he didn't double clutch on a one-timer attempt) and Scott Nicol for the Sharks, with yet another skate assist from Kyle Quincey (Kyle, please stay away from the front of the net. k thx). The Sharks added an empty net goal late thanks to an untimely bounce off of a linesman (it's possible the puck hit a Shark player on the bench as well).
That was it. I thought both teams put in a good effort tonight, but special teams was the difference tonight and when special teams are going to be the difference the Avalanche are often going to be on the losing end. What else is there to say? Well, other than that Matt Duchene needs to stay out of the box and Kyle Quincey needs to stop dropping or breaking his stick.
Lines
David Van der Gulik did not make it into the game tonight, with Skipper Joe retaining the 7 D approach. It worked out, as Adam Foote lasted just 9 shifts before going out with a "head injury". Oh boy. Brandon Yip returned from his groin injury, with David Jones sitting due to a bruised arm.

Quick Hits
- Mike Haynes had 2 or 3 different ways to pronounce Holos...none correct.
- Reported attendance was a dismal 12,803
- John-Michael Liles set a franchise record, becoming the first to score in 7 straight games to start the season. He's also the first Avalanche / Nordique defenseman to have a 7-game scoring streak.

Het Rappel D David Liffiton van de Lawine van Colorado
The Avalanche today have reportedly recalled defenseman David Liffiton from Lake Erie. Liffiton's recall was necessitated by the injury to Adam Foote; Foote is out indefinitely with a concussion.
Liffiton is a big (6'2", 210) left-shooting defenseman and will be wearing #5 (if he dresses). Liffiton was signed by the Avalanche this summer and was the captain of the Monsters (where he had 2 points and 16 penalty minutes in 6 games). Liffiton is clearly not afraid to drop the gloves, as he has 50+ career AHL & NHL fights according to hockeyfights.com, including 2 bouts against Avalanche forward Cody McLeod. Here's an example of a big bout with Brandon Prust when both were in the OHL: http://www.hockeyfights.com/fights/79893.
Liffiton was originally drafted by the Avalanche in the 2nd round of the 2003 draft, one pick ahead of...wait for it...Jimmy Howard. He was then traded to the Rangers in 2004 along with Chris MacAllister and a 2nd round pick for Matt Barnaby and a 3rd rounder that would become Denis Parshin. He has 3 career NHL games with the Rangers (no points).
Today's Fun Draft Fact: Liffiton is one of 3 Avalanche draft picks in 2003 to ever make it to the NHL. All three will be in the house tomorrow night: Liffiton, David Jones (9th) and Brad Richardson (5th). Philippe Dupuis and Kyle Quincey are also a products of that draft (taken by Columbus and Detroit in the 4th round, respecitively) as is Kings forward Dustin Brown (1st).
